HomeSafe Program

In the years between 2010 and 2013, BevChain focused on improving its systems-based approach to safety.  That is, we spent time making sure we had processes established that would provide strong mitigating evidence in the event WorkCover or an equivalent authority came knocking (compliance).  This had a positive influence on injury rates.  Between mid-2010 and late 2013 the impact of this “traditional approach” was measurable, injury rates fell consistently.  Additionally, internal and external audit compliance dramatically increased.

Whist these approaches established the rules employees must work by, they did not create a culture of empowerment or ownership around safety, nor did it create a brand that was relevant to our business.  Safety was not front of mind.

HomeSafe Program

HomeSAFE is a multifaceted program and aims to influence leadership and employee behaviour through managing perception.  We create scenarios where leaders and employees feel they are being observed by each other, and as a result behave safely more frequently.

Our employee approach is not classroom based and relies on managers having meaningful interactions with employees about their behaviour and designing a workplace that communicates safety to the people within it. We look to recognise and reward safe behaviour (saying thanks) over targeting and punishing at risk behaviour. HomeSAFE is designed to be a cultural change tool, not a Change management is also a significant part of the HomeSAFE program.

Leaders are encouraged to take ownership of the brand and express it in a way that is relevant to their business.  They are encouraged to design interactions which promote brand awareness and safe behaviour.  We aim to inspire our leaders to challenge the way we have traditionally worked and to try new approaches.  We are seeing that this freedom within the HomeSAFE framework is resulting in pockets of strong leadership engagement/ownership that was not present with our traditional systems approach.  Simple programs like personalising and branding shirts for significant safety milestones and running HomeSAFE colouring in competitions are keeping the brand vision strong in engaged sites.

In the end we want our team to behave like our HomeSAFE heroes Bev & Ridge:

Environment & Sustainability

BevChain is committed environmentally sustainable operations.  Our 2017 target reflects the expected outcomes of key initiatives planned to minimise CO2-e emissions:

route optimisation

Through the use of scheduling and routing technology BevChain optimises its fleet efficiency.  Improved truck utilisation & multi drop routing will reduce the km travelled and lower the number of trucks on our roads whilst delivering more product.  The net result of this is a lower carbon output to deliver beverages around our vast country.

fleet design and engine configurations

We pride ourselves on having new, well presented fleet.  As we bring fleet into our business we uphold our commitment to the environment and implement fleet choices which meet our unique operational requirements whilst not compromising environmental emission standards.  Minimum standards for all new fleet include Euro 5 specification engines which giving cleaner more efficient performance along with modern aero dynamic bodies which enhance fuel efficiencies

ecodrive training and assessment

We invest time and resources into the development of our drivers.  Drivers are be trained how to reduce their environmental impact through “Ecodriving techniques”.  Ecodriving is a standard part of driver induction and annual in cabin assessment.

energy efficiency opportunity audits

BevChain routinely inspects its premises to identify opportunities to save energy.  Audits of lighting, climate control systems and electrical equipment are incorporated into monthly workplace inspections.  Formal audits against our business standard procedures will ensure systems are being used to take necessary action to implement corrective actions where opportunities for efficiency are identified.
